Teenager Alcohol Addiction

Teenagers are undeniably at the most crucial of junctures wherein the predilection for alcohol addiction peaks. On the contrary the parent is blissfully ignorant of the fact and lives with the conviction that the teenager is far removed from this malady of modern day living. Statistics indicate that twenty five percent of the teenagers in the twelve to seventeen years age group are alcohol addicts which may go up to figures as high as fifty percent in the eighteen to twenty two years age group – making it one of the severest of hazards which afflict the present day youth.

 ALCOHOL ADDICTION

Alcohol addiction in teenagers is known to lead to a wide array of maladies:

Increased incidence of road traffic accidents and deaths

Deteriorating academic performance

Indulgence in unprotected sex at progressively earlier ages

Succumbing to altered behavior syndromes like Depression

THE MECHANICS

The youth is at a juncture wherein experimentation and shifting of perspectives is the order of the day – the youth striving to find a personal identity predictably experiments with new habits of the likes of Alcohol – peer pressure being indisputably the major contributor.

PARENTAL INTERVENTION

Parents are the fulcrum and are a vital figure in the order of things in the teenager perspective. The discerning parent would well be adept at:

Opening the channels of communication with the teenager – with a perspective at a variance – that of a friend rather than an authoritative figure.

Educating the child using the modality of a two way informal communication channel wherein the parent could well use the rationale of the mind and help pick and choose friends who do not indulge in habits of the likes of Alcohol.

Encouraging the child to experiment with different and unique activities and sports rather than Alcohol and drugs.

The parent needs expose the maladies of Alcohol addiction of the likes that could negatively impact the vitality and elixir of youth – a compromise in the physical fitness which could retard indulging and excelling in sports and adventure activities – even leading to death for some if not most.

The emotionally responsible parent with little or no compromise needs undertake supervision –a much-detested adult activity –. A supervised teenager even when within the youthful realm of a peer driven party would find little opportunity to indulge in activities of the likes of alcohol intake, which are compatible, and a natural accompaniment of peer parties and party – like ambiences.

PROFESSIONAL OPINION

Parents unable to intervene with any degree of success would be well advised to seek professional medical advice for this is one malady which does not fade with time – rather the addiction only becomes stronger with time and more refractory to correction.

Medical Professionals specialize in managing adolescents with addictions and the enterprising parent well recognizing this strength and exploits it for the well being and success – both professional and emotional for the teenager – yet to experience the pleasure of success and life – which could well become a distant dream – should the parent not make the all important effort.
