Signs That Your Teen Needs Help

It’s difficult for a parent to deal with a teenager, but it’s even more difficult to deal with a teenager with behavioral issues. Sometimes parents aren’t even aware of the signs/survey that teen needs help but think the teen is just “bad.” One needs to become aware of the signs that there is more going on than just a “bad” teen. There is nothing more frustrating to a teenager than trying to reach out to parents for help when the parents don’t understand or recognize there is a problem.

 Behavior Issues

Every parents knows that there are going to be times that a teenager is going to make you wonder what you were thinking when you decided to have children, but when these behaviors become a routine part of daily life, it’s time to evaluate the behavior. This is especially true if the behavior becomes increasingly more difficult to handle or if a teen, who was less difficult experiences a major deterioration in behavior.

Reasons for Poor Behavior

Teenagers have their own sets of values, and sometimes these do not agree with the parents’ rules. These minor behavior problems are not necessarily a sign/survey that teen needs help, but may be simply the result of “growing pains.” Of course, there also exists the possibility that other reasons can exist such as depression or other types of mental disorders that can affect behavior. It is also important to consider the possibility of a food or medication allergy that is causing the poor behavior.

Controlling Poor Behavior

Many different methods can be utilized to make a teen understand you are unhappy with the behavior they are exhibiting. All of the signs/survey that teen needs help must be considered before evaluating the discipline for a particular behavior. At this age, however, it is more effective to consider a discipline that involves the removal of some favorite things such as telephone, television, computer, and time with friends outside of school. Of course, it is important to not go overboard with the discipline, but rather make the punishment fit the crime. Even for those parents who believe in corporal punishment, this is not appropriate for teenagers nor does it work as well as the methods that have been listed above.

The important thing to remember is learning to be aware of the signs/survey that teen needs help and to act on it before it becomes a serious problem. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the problem is going to get better if you just tighten the reins more because in most cases, quite the opposite will happen. Although this method may work for teenagers who are really just trying to spread their wings and see how far they can push their parents, those who have a mental or physical reason for their behavior are going to become confused, or possibly even aggressive. Always keep your eyes open and know the signs that a teen needs help instead of simply thinking that it’s just a “phase,” a part of that rebellious stage.
