Conduct Disorder Among Teens

Teenagers who exhibit recurring act of misbehavior of violating other’s rights and going against the normal rules may have conduct disorder.

This is not the common behavior of other kids who do something, learn from it then move on.  This is a more serious condition that needs to be treated as soon as it is diagnosed to avoid further complications later in life.

Signs and Symptoms Of Conduct Disorder

An adolescent having conduct disorder may show any of these characteristics:

Bullies or threatens other people.

Harms others physically with the use of a weapon such as bat, knife or gun.

Shows physical cruelty to people and animals.

Forces somebody into sexual activity.

Steals items.

Has broken into someone else’s property.

Absents himself from school.

Has engaged in setting a fire to intentionally cause damage.

Often stays out late at night despite the objections of parents.

Conduct disorder among children may be a result of different factors such as child abuse, brain damage, traumatic experiences and school failure.

Treatment of Conduct Disorder

If you realize that your kid has conduct disorder, it is very important that you have your child treated as early as possible. Treatment may really be challenging and difficult. However, as a parent, this is your way of helping him adapt better in life especially when he reaches adulthood.

Most of the time, professional help is needed for a successful treatment of your teen. These professionals already know how to deal with this condition and can provide several solutions after a thorough assessment of your teen.

One of these is behavior therapy. This teaches your child how to properly express his emotions and how to control them, especially the extreme ones. This is helpful when your kid easily gets mad and expresses his disgust in an irrepressible manner.

You may also enroll your child in boarding schools that specialize in troubled teenagers. Enlisting your child in boot camps, wilderness programs, Christian programs and other youth campaigns will also help him understand other people better because of increased social activity.

You, as a parent, may also want to join support groups to meet other parents who are also experiencing the same problem. A support group is a great venue where you can learn from other people about how they managed to help their child improve. This is also a good place where you can have yourself heard because you know that people in the group are interested in what you have to say.

Treating a child or a teenager with conduct disorder is really a long-term plan. This needs a lot of cooperation from you, your kid, relatives and friends around him. It sure takes a lot of time to learn new attitudes and adapt better behavior patterns.

But no matter how long it takes, as a parent, you should make this an important goal that should be achieved. Anyways, it is your child’s life that is at stake here. Treating your child’s issues as early as possible will give them a good chance of having a successful future. And do not forget, showing unconditional love and affection to your teens will surely help a lot.
