Prostate Cancer Research
What We Know About Prostate Cancer
|
Prostate cancer research is done continuously as a
search for answers. Yet, for many, the questions remain unanswered.
Although prostate cancer is diagnosed most commonly in elderly men,
as the average age of diagnosis is 70, it is well known that most
men will die of something else but will have prostate cancer as
well. That is, they will not realize that this is the case.
Research has lead to the ability to know who is more likely to get
prostate cancer. It is known that black men are the most commonly
struck with the condition. But, it is also known that it can be
hereditary as well. Those that have a father or another blood
relative with prostate cancer have double the risk of having the
condition as other individuals. But, there is no known gene that is
specific to prostate cancer.
Many genes may be the cause though for example, the
genes BRCA2 and BRCA2 are known causers of ovarian cancer and breast
cancer in women. |

They may play a role in prostate cancer as well.

The prostate cancer research that has been
done has opened the door to many more treatment options,
more successful treatments as well as answering many more
questions. Because prostate cancer still goes undiagnosed in
many men, it is a condition that is quite serious when
found. Research has allowed for the use of radiation,
surgery, hormone treatments and many other treatment
options. But, research remains very important to determining
how to diagnose and cure the disease. Although treatment can
help to slow or even stop the cancer, it is difficult to
cure it.
Nonetheless, with continued prostate cancer research, it is
well understood and can be fought once diagnosed. Men should
have regular visits to their doctor and should relay to the
doctor any individuals in their family line that may have
had this condition, even if it may have been undiagnosed.

Prostate cancer research is very important to the
understanding of how to treat this condition.
