What Are Herbal Remedies
Herbal Remedies are the natural, herb based
treatments for a range of medical conditions and ailments.
Herbal Remedies may be effective in treating the underlying
medical condition, or they may simply offer relieve from one or
more of the symptoms caused by an underlying medical condition.
A great deal of acrimony and ill-feeling seems to
exist between the mainstream medical profession and the alternative
medical profession
What the majority of mainstream, "conventional",
medical practitioners would probably all agree on is that there is a
lot of hype in the alternative medicine arena, that many of the
claims of alternative medicine have never been properly tested by
rigorous, scientific processes, and that there also seems to be a
large number of "snake oil" sales people who make claims that are
way too good to be true, or who make ridiculous statements (like the
quote above) without a shred of proof.
In addition, many of the claimed beneficial effects
of herbal remedies are also fairly loosely stated, and this also
causes credibility issues for many skeptics and mainstream medical
practitioners. For example, a range of herbal remedies claim to be
able to treat serious medical conditions, such as cancer.
However, this is a loose claim, and it is not meant to mean that any
herbal remedy can cure cancer. Instead, the herb may be able to
treat some of the side-effects or symptoms of cancer (such as
depression, pain, etc) or some of the side-effects of the treatments
for cancer (such as the headaches and nausea that result during
chemotherapy). So, the herbal remedy may indeed be able to help a
sufferer cope with cancer (or the treatments for cancer), without
having any hope of actually curing the condition.
A great deal of the acrimony between conventional and
alternative medical practitioners would not exist if, perhaps, the
various claims of herbal remedies were explained more fully (or even
less loosely).
Regardless of the tension between conventional and
alternative medical practitioners, an increasing number of people
are considering and using herbal remedies, and the reasons for this
include:
-
Herbal remedies tend to be gentler.
-
Herbal remedies tend to have fewer and less troublesome side
effects.
-
In many cases, the herbs used for herbal remedies can be grown in
your own garden or in window pots.
-
Many of the herbs such as Ginger, Basil, etc. can be used is
cooking to make the food you eat more interesting and flavorful, while
continuing to provide their treatment benefits.
