Chronic and Severe Pain
Chronic pain interferes with life. It distorts
people’s personalities. Pain impedes productivity on the job.
Chronic and severe pain is very frustrating to the sufferers, and to
all of those who share their lives.
Chronic pain can be particularly frustrating to the
medical community. Many dollars can be spent before relief is found.
For some conditions, conventional medicine has no solution. Pain is
hard to measure. It is hard to document. For many years, it was all
in your head. Fortunately, as time has gone on, conventional
medicine has discovered that pain is not often psychosomatic.
The Purpose of Pain
Pain is a message that something is WRONG. Your body
is trying to alert you by sounding the alarm. Pain is how your body
gets your attention. Pain will ratchet up until it gets your
attention. In Law Enforcement they have a concept called "Pain
compliance". Though safe methods, pain is increased until the
subject complies. You body invented pain compliance. It is your
signal to listen-up!
We live in a culture that encourages us to ignore
pain. When we can no longer ignore it, there are drugs to help us
tune out the pain. So often pain is a signal something needs to
change. Resisting change gets progressively more expensive.
Here is the tough part. Exactly what IS your body
trying to tell you?
Physical
Sometimes there is a physical problem. In all cases,
see your health care provider to get checked out to make sure you
know what the cause is. It is dangerous to assume. We want to treat
the cause, not just cover-up the symptom with a band-aid. Symptoms
can be confusing. Chest pain that feels like acid-reflux can be a
heart attack. Re-occurring yeast infections can be an early warning
of Diabetes or AIDs. In these cases pain is protecting us by giving
us a warning before permanent damage has the chance to occur.
Never try to put a
band-aid on a life threatening situation.
Stress
Stress can trigger pain, or make the experience of
pain worse. Evidence is showing that stress does impair our immune
system making us more vulnerable to a whole host of diseases. Pain
can be a red-flag that something in our life needs to change. Look
at what is triggering your pain. Think about how you can change
yourbeliefs and circumstances to situations that will be healthier
for you.
If you are open to it, you can even try a meditation
where you ask your body what it is trying to tell you. Remember,
this is about asking – not telling. Ask your body what it wants.
Expect to honor its requests. All healing is self healing.
An Alternative Approach to Pain Relief
Even though implementing complex computer systems was
my vocation, alternative medicine has been my hobby since I was a
child. I read voraciously and squirrel away tips and remedies. I
always like to be prepared with an option for anyone who is hurting.
All of the remedies referenced here I have tried myself. If I didn’t
have the ailment described, I still have tried everything before I
will recommend it, just to see how it feels.
Over the years I have noticed that my radar for bad
ideas is very accurate. Ephedra and Nutrasweet are examples of
products that screamed bad idea to me years before the warnings
started coming out. Just because it is natural, doesn’t mean it is
safe. Just because it works for someone, doesn’t mean it will work
for you. An example for me is soy. Soy has many terrific qualities.
It is a mainstay for many people. It is the only food item I have
run across that upsets my gastric system.
The options I have collected here span many different
disciplines from old-fashioned home remedies, to vitamins, to
supplements, to Homeopathics, to traditional yoga. None of them are
habit forming, except the yoga.
I have chosen approaches that are affordable, ranging
in price from pennies to $29.95. They are all available over the
counter or by mail order. These options have worked for me and many
people I have known over the years. However, you are responsible for
your health. Check with your health care provider first to rule out
more serious conditions, and to make sure you have no complicating
factors or counter-indicators.
With one exception, the migraine headaches, you will
know within 20 to 30 minutes if these remedies are going to work for
you to help ease your pain.
Your body is the final judge of what works and what
doesn’t. Respect it. You can’t win an argument with your body.
Remember, it does have the final word.
