Acid Reflux
In Family Members
|
|
Acid reflux and
indigestion is something that is not fun to deal with. Of
course, if you are the person dealing with it, it can be
quite disturbing. But, even if you are only the family
member of a person who has chronic acid reflux problems or
indigestion, you can too have it rough.
The most common complaints of family members of those who
suffer with acid reflux is the fact that they can’t cook
anything they want to cook without upsetting the stomach of
the family member who suffers. This is likely a very
accurate complaint. However, it is important to remember to
be sensitive to family members that suffer with acid
reflux.
The fact is that those
who suffer don’t do so on purpose. They are not being
picky about what they eat because they want to be difficult. |
They are
being picky about their diet because it is in their best
interest overall. There are just some things that those who
suffer with acid reflux cannot and should not eat at all. If
you are a family member of someone with acid reflux problems and
feel like you are missing out on eating your favorite foods
because they can’t enjoy them, you need to find a way to have
your favorite foods.
You can either have them when
you eat out at restaurants, or you can choose to cook them for
yourself while you cook something else for the rest of the family.
The family member with acid reflux will understand and you won’t be as
resentful because you will be able to enjoy foods that you love and
don’t bother your stomach at all.
Another thing you can do to
show your support to a family member with acid reflux problems is to
acknowledge their problem but not to make them feel bad or too
different because of it. This can be quite tricky to balance.
On one hand you want to be
sure they know you are thinking of them and notice that they need a
special diet or other special treatment. But, you don’t want to make
them feel guilty for needing special attention. This is particularly
important when you are dealing with children or teens who suffer with
chronic indigestion and acid reflux.
|
The best way you
can do this is with your actions. Simply cook foods that
you know the family member can eat. Educate yourself in
what they should be eating and that will help out a lot.
Don’t discuss their condition to outsiders of the family.
This can be embarrassing and make them feel too different.
So, be sure that you allow them to talk about their
condition if they wish, but never do it without them
starting the conversation first. Some people can be quite
sensitive about their eating and their condition.
As you can see,
although it may be frustrating to deal with a family member
that suffers with acid reflux or indigestion problems, you
can deal with it by being supportive. Being supportive is
the best thing you can do because it will make the family
member feel better and live a healthier and happier life. |
